An NEC study found that people who use dual monitors were 44 percent more productive.

Having at least two computer monitors (or more!) is one of the best business productivity tools you can have along with a fast computer and an 8-button mouse. In fact, an NEC study at the University of Utah found that people who used dual monitors were as much as 44 percent more productive at certain text-editing operations than people using a single monitor.

Here at Radok, we use three computer monitors (and sometimes four) for each workspace and find it invaluable for our programmers, web designers, secretaries - everyone that uses a computer. Having at least one source monitor always open while working on a project provides a significant benefit in time savings, with much less fatigue from constantly opening and minimizing your active programs.

And just getting a single, huge monitor that has several programs open and resized all over the screen is as unproductive to work from, as it is sloppy to look at.

You'll wonder why you didn't do it years ago.

For those currently going solo, moving up to dual monitors will quickly show you immediate benefits, and you'll be wondering why you didn't do it years ago. The down side is after you have a taste for two monitors, you'll soon want to find desk space sufficient to move up to triple or four monitors.

Fortunately, without a lot of customization, Windows XP readily supports up to 10 monitors, and Windows 7 can support at least 16 monitors - more than enough for the most demanding power user.

Multiple monitors are dependant on the use of single or multiple-port video cards, the appropriate PCI slots available in your computer, and whether your monitors use VGA or DVI connectors (A simple adapter will convert DVI to VGA).
