Flight Attendants From a Golden Era In Aviation
Vintage Flight Attendant Photos

In an age of cavity searches and bans on nail clippers, it's difficult to imagine there was a time in the airline industry when it was actually a pleasure to fly.
This was also a time when passengers enjoyed the professionalism of the cabin crew - and the inevitable pleasant chat with a personable stewardess.
Before these stewardesses became "flight attendants," you could almost count on a trip filled with attention, a cheerful demeanor, and concern over every detail to insure the flight was often entertaining and always pleasurable.
Since this golden era of the skies, flying has never been quite the same.
Some say it's gone for good.
By the looks of these photos, they are probably right.

Northwest's Futile Attempt At Change

Northwest Airlines recently tried to get away from the military-style blue and gray employee uniforms commonly seen today. With parent company Delta, they hired prominent designer Richard Tyler to create a stylish red designer dress for its flight attendants.
The reaction was overwhelmingly positive, but in today's world of political correctness, even airlines that try to make improvements are quickly repressed.
Tyler had created the sleek and sexy new uniforms for flight attendants up to size 18.
The flight attendants union immediately filed a grievance, demanding that the stylish dress be offered in a jumbo version up to size 28, to better accommodate many of today's flight attendants.
